  1. Problem: Unable to connect to home directory. A "semaphore timeout" error message appears.


  2. Solution: Verify that DNS is setup correctly and functioning properly. Go to Control Panel>Network>tcp/ip properties>DNS and confirm that any IP address configured is accurate and all DNS servers are functioning.

  3. Problem: Modifications of NIS Home directory information is not being updated in User Manager after the user logs on utilizing NCD NIS.


  4. Solution: Go to Start>Programs>Administrative Tools>NIS Configuration>User Properties>Set NIS User Home Directory and click on On Account creation and logon.

  5. Problem: An "invalid file format" error message may occur in Word 97 when saving to an NFS mount.


  6. Solution: Disable the UNC use in Word 8.0 for Office 97. Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER on Local Machine\Software\Microsoft\Office\8.0\Word\Options and add the value: DontUseUNC:REG_DWORD:0x1.

  7. Problem: How to obtain a debug text file from the NCD NIS Configuration utility.


  8. Solution: Go to Administrative Tools>NIS Configuration, right-click on the NIS Configuration title bar and choose About NIS Configuration... Hold down the Ctrl+Alt+Shift keys and click on OK simultaneously. Click on the Enable Debugging Output check box.

  9. Problem: Unable to mount NFS drive without having to type in username and password.


  10. Solution: When connecting to a network drive, NT will first use the username and password in which the user is currently logged on. Change the username/password so that they match or when mapping the drive, highlight Interdrive NT and choose the Search button. Click on the security tab and type in the username and password for connecting to the Unix host.

  11. Problem: Mounting an NFS drive using Interdrive may cause the following error, "file locking is not supported on this server."


  12. Solution: Uncheck "Enable file locking/sharing under Control Panel>Network>Services>FTP Software InterDrive Client>Properties>Advanced.
