NCD Introduces ThinPATH Management Portal

Innovative software utilizes web services technologies to complement recent ThinPATH PC release

Portland, Oregon, July 23, 2002 - Network Computing Devices, Inc., ((NCD) (OTC: NCDI.OB)), a leading producer of thin client solutions, today announced the ThinPATH Management Portal, the latest dimension of its Thinfrastructure family of offerings. The ThinPATH Management Portal broadens the scope of NCD's ThinPATH PC software for any company that is deploying server-based computing by using PCs as thin clients. This innovative system supports both PCs as well as ThinSTAR terminals, and significantly reduces support and maintenance costs for server-based computing environments by centralizing software installation, desktop configuration and ongoing PC management throughout the corporate network.

The NCD ThinPATH Management Portal provides a single point of administration to install software, updates or patches, and completely eliminates the need for manual software installation and configuration at the desktop. Software can be organized into components for specific updates, thereby dramatically reducing network utilization.

The NCD ThinPATH Management Portal supports additional centralized desktop management tasks. The software defines, creates and manages groups of desktops or individual desktops with unique software installation, connection information and security settings for devices through an intuitive administration interface. Once defined, this information is transferred over the network to the targeted desktops using web services technologies based on XML. Companies can segment their desktops into the appropriate functional groups for their enterprise, and can tailor specific servers to allow or restrict desktop access.

"In order to achieve the lowest possible total cost of ownership, centralized desktop software deployment, configuration, and management are essential. With support for a wide range of desktops, the NCD ThinPATH Management Portal manages the desktop administration in a server-based computing environment," states Paul Robinson, chief technology officer, NCD. "We have received enthusiastic support for this new offering. Companies will discover that this approach meets their IT needs better and more cost-effectively than investing in comprehensive PC management tools that require dedicated developer and support staff, plus additional prerequisite systems that may be difficult to install in a distributed system. This is the first step in a whole new way to manage thin client environments using web services technologies."

A single server is capable of automating the management of hundreds of desktops simultaneously across a network. By achieving desktop management with a minimal server load, customers can reduce the number of management servers needed to configure their installed desktops. The ThinPATH Management Portal's intuitive web-based management interface simplifies administration and enables remote management over the distributed network.

In conjunction with today's announcement, NCD has also announced a new version of ThinPATH PC. This innovative software is designed to transform PCs into thin clients to significantly reduce PC desktop support and maintenance costs for server-based computing environments. Since the product was first introduced earlier this year, NCD has made numerous enhancements based on customer feedback. One important new enhancement is the ability to configure the software to automatically establish a connection to a server-based application when the PC is powered up. Since no user action is required, ThinPATH PC eliminates another opportunity for users to access the local capabilities of the PC, thereby further reducing support costs. This feature is also useful for companies using the PC as an information kiosk to ensure continued operation. For example, if the PC power is accidentally reset or the network fails temporarily, the desktop is automatically restored to the desired display.

Pricing and Availability:

The ThinPATH Management Portal will be available in August. It starts at $999 for the initial 15 desktop management licenses; additional desktop management licenses are priced at $59 each. NCD ThinPATH PC is priced at $119 per desktop license and is available now. Licenses for the software are available from NCD resellers.
